Doomsday 2012

2012 – Counting Down To Calamity?
Doomsday prophecies are as old as recorded history, and probably pre-date it. It is commonly presumed that they represent an effort to impose some sort of order on the universe, or, at least, say that something doesn’t fit the established order.
In historical times, they’ve run the gamut from the Great Alignment of 1987 that was supposed to trigger every single geological fault on the earth to the Heaven’s Gate cult committing mass suicide at the arrival of comet Hale-Bopp, to millennialists in both the 10th century and the end of the 20th century expecting the end of the world to happen.
Much like the boy that cried wolf, we’re surrounded by news of doomsday’s – Y2K, global warming, peak oil, the housing market collapse and the Great Recession. Certainly, it appears that no matter where you turn, there’s evidence that the world is going to end…and now, people are painting a date for this end, in 2012.
Specifically, the winter solstice December 21st, 2012. Much of this comes from reading about the turn over of the Mayan Long Count calendar. Much like every thousand years in the Gregorian calendar, the lower order digits reset to 0, the Mayans have a long count calendar that re-sets in periods of 5,125 years.
It originally started its count on August 11, 3114 BC. Since the 1960s, noted Mayanists have been predicting an Armageddon set on the turn-over of the Mayan calendar.
Some have been claiming it lines up with the ‘true’ calendar corrected dates of the End Times of the Bible and the Book of Revelations.
Historiographers who know that the Book of Revelations dates back to earlier Babylonian mythology note some similarities within Babylonian myth as well. It goes beyond the people postulating religion and calenderic doomsday predictions.
The Galactic Alignment (where the Sun, the Earth and Jupiter align with the center of the galaxy) happens at about that time as well, something that happens roughly every 600 years or so. Others are noting that the current sunspot cycle will also run towards its absolute minimum on that date, presaging a doomsday in 2012 built off of a global ice age.
Other postulations on what could happen during that time include a geomagnetic reversal, which is something our planet appears to be about 10,000 years overdue for; during such an event, nobody knows for certain what would happen, but we’d probably lose much of the protection of the Earth’s magnetic field at that time.
Somewhat more outlandish predictions include speculation about the planet Nibiru, which orbits oppose the Earth, and would swing by and cause global cataclysm, or tear the Earth apart from tidal stresses. Others say that an asteroid or comet will impact on that date.
Others say that the ‘doomsday’ of 2012 isn’t an apocalypse determined by physics or astronomy, but rather the day when humanity will be judged on its collective consciousness, and if we don’t change our behaviors as a species, we will miss the opportunity to ascend to beings of pure energy.
Even fairly mundane sources are pointing to apocalyptic signs in 2012. The best current Office of Budget Management projections say that the United States will go broke around December of 2012, unable to pay the interest on its debts, or pay for government services at the same time.
This is an entitlement crash of epic proportions, and is currently estimated at over 60 trillion dollars and growing. None of the main stream media sources give any decent accounting of what they expect to happen in 2012; at best, they mock it by making disaster movies out of it – it’s easier to tell everyone to keep on consuming by giving them a show than giving them the information they need to prepare for the changes the world will undergo on the doomsday of 2012.
Indeed, even when the signs are all around them with the stock markets, the mainstream media just keeps peddling the “It will have to rebound eventually” lie. Notice how they treated people who prepared for the Year 2000 glitch – they were portrayed as a bunch of earnest crackpots. It’s the people who are prepared who will be able to capitalize on the changes in the world after the 2012 doomsday.
